This story is erotic and suspenseful. There are many elements that ensure this is an enticing read. The characters have a particular chemistry that time and events cannot break. I really liked the underlying suspense story, the investigation into the police and what they did, how they did it and the final outcome.
Shane Dominic is a cop with a grudge. He has spent many years regretting one loss, Laura, but has moved up in the FBI hierarchy and is now back in Chicago investigating police corruption. He has had access to tapes that include Laura and her husband and he feels disgust at what Laura has become. When her husband is killed he takes Laura away to get some answers from her. Shane tries to get Laura to forgive him but she continues to evade his questioning and determination to find the truth. When he does find the truth, Shane is ashamed and must make it up to Laura.
Laura Vasquez is Shane’s former girlfriend. She broke his heart when she married another. Laura has had to live a lie for thirteen years but also has information that will be very helpful to the police. Laura has been manipulated and used and she has reached the point where she cannot take much more. When Shane takes her to his cabin, she says she is reluctant to go with him. There are times where we see her steel backbone but I felt, at times, she was also too weak. I really saw her as someone who was able to grow from her experiences and knowing when to strike despite the obstacles.
Within hours of her husband’s death and with Shane engaged, the pair get together. I am really not a fan of someone cheating on their partner as Shane appears to have done to his fiancée, so this aspect disappoints me. Shane does admit eventually that he is no longer engaged but this does seem to be after he has been with Laura. It still plays on my mind. The pair do have chemistry and this ensures they should be together.
There were times when I thought, and felt, there was a very fine line between consent and enforced sexual advances although Laura does eventually acquiesce because she loved and still does love Shane. And again the suggestion of enforced sexual advances was of concern. There is absolutely no issue with the way the scenes were described and the language and any implements and tools involved except where consent is an issue.
This pair is destined to be together and no one is going to break those links and this evident through their couplings and how they circle and come together. This pairing is hot and heavy and their tastes are suited. As with many good stories, the timing for a couple is of importance.
